Privacy Policy

Welcome to Hangerang! Your privacy matters to us. This Privacy Policy explains how Hangerang (“we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, shares, and protects your information when you use our mobile application (“App”). By using Hangerang, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

1. Information We Collect

We may collect the following types of information:

  • Personal Information Your first and last name, phone number, and profile photo that you provide during onboarding.
  • Contact Information — Hashed, Not Stored Hangerang does not upload, store, or retain your contacts’ names or phone numbers. When you sync your contacts, each phone number is hashed locally on your device before transmission. Only the resulting hash is sent to our servers. This allows us to identify mutual connections between users without Hangerang ever having access to your contacts’ actual information.
  • Location Data If you grant permission, we collect your location while the app is in use to show you which mutual friends are nearby and available to hang. Location is used only while the app is active and is never collected in the background. You can enable or disable location access at any time in your device settings.
  • User Content Messages, Itches, Wish You Were Here (WYWH) posts, Props, and other content you create or share within the App.
  • Device Information Device type, operating system version, and push notification tokens for delivering notifications.
  • Usage Data Information about how you interact with the App, including features used and session activity.

2. How Connections Work

Hangerang is built on mutual relationships. You will only appear to — and be able to interact with — users who are mutual contacts, meaning both users have each other’s phone number. Having someone’s number without them having yours does not create a connection on Hangerang.

When a mutual contact relationship ends (either user removes the other’s number and re-syncs), the connection between those users is removed from our system and neither user retains visibility of the other during their next app session.

3. SMS Notifications

Hangerang sends SMS messages on your behalf when you give Props to a friend who is not yet on the app. These messages include a personalized teaser and a link to download the app. Standard messaging rates from your carrier may apply. You initiate these messages; we do not send unsolicited SMS to your contacts.

4. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Comply with legal obligations
  • Provide and improve the App and its features
  • Identify mutual connections between users
  • Show nearby availability to mutual contacts
  • Deliver push notifications and SMS messages you initiate
  • Monitor and prevent fraudulent or abusive activity

5. Sharing of Information

We do not sell your personal data. We may share your information with:

  • Service Providers: Third-party companies that help us operate the App, including cloud hosting (Supabase), push notification delivery (Expo), and analytics. These providers are contractually prohibited from using your data for any purpose other than providing services to us.
  • Other Users: Your name, profile photo, availability status, Itches, WYWH posts, Props, and Oath are visible to your mutual contacts within the App.
  • Legal Authorities: If required by law, court order, or to protect the rights and safety of our users.

6. Visibility and Privacy Controls

We do not sell your personal data. We may share your information with:

  • Ghost: You may ghost any mutual contact at any time. Ghosted users will not see your Itches, location, or availability. You can manage your ghost list in the Your People section of the App.
  • Target Groups: When posting an Itch, you can limit visibility to specific groups of mutual contacts.
  • Availability Toggle: You control when you appear as available to your mutual contacts.

7. Data Retention

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. Contact hashes are retained to maintain mutual connection matching. If you delete your account, your personal data, content, and contact hashes are permanently deleted from our systems within 30 days.

8. Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures including encrypted data transmission and hashed contact storage. However, no system is 100% secure and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Your Choices and Rights

  • Access and Update: You can update your profile information at any time within the App.
  • Delete Account: You can request account deletion directly within the App under Settings, or by contacting us at contact@hangerang.com. Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.
  • Revoke Permissions: You can revoke location, contacts, or notification access at any time through your device settings.

10. Children’s Privacy

Hangerang is not intended for users under 16 years old. If we discover that a user under 16 has created an account, we will delete their information promptly. If you believe a minor has provided us with personal information, please contact us at contact@hangerang.com.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify you via the App or by email. Continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
